The York University wrestling team showcased their strength and depth this weekend, achieving a remarkable sixth-place finish in a highly competitive tournament featuring 36 teams.
The most dominant performance came from the women's team at 90kg, where York remarkably captured both the gold and silver medals. Gurjot Sidhu stood out as a champion, securing the 1st place title and earning a leading 10.0 team points. Close behind, teammate Abina Dushyanthan earned the 2nd place finish in the same category, contributing a substantial 7.0 team points and confirming York's overwhelming control of that division. This double-medal showing was the highlight of the tournament for the Lions.
Further reinforcing the team's standing were three critical bronze medal finishes. On the men's side, both Yahya Akar (65kg) and Paramveer Tiwana (76kg) battled their way to 3rd place finishes. Juniper Wong added another podium spot with a 3rd place result in the Women's 53kg class. Each of these bronze medals contributed 5.0 team points, illustrating the strong resolve of the middle-weight classes. The team's scoring was rounded out by important contributions from wrestlers who placed just shy of the podium, including Wesam Sa'ed in 4th place finish (82kg) and 6th place finishes from Andrew Lewis-Garraway (57kg) and Larry Dimaria (100kg).
