The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team won the McMaster Invitational Bonspiel this weekend in Hamilton.
The U of T men earned their third invitational win of the season after finishing the weekend with a 4-1 record across the two-day bonspiel. During the four-match round-robin period, the Blues cruised to a 9-1 win over McMaster B, 7-2 win over Trent and 9-4 win over Brock, while dropping a close 5-3 decision to McMaster A. The three wins propelled U of T into the bonspiel final, setting up a rematch with McMaster A.
Continuing to showcase how even the two teams were throughout the weekend, the pair would be tied 4-4 after seven ends. However, even with the Marauders having the hammer, Toronto would score a lone point in the eighth and final end to secure a 5-4 championship victory.
The Blues will continue their invitational schedule next with the Brock University Bonspiel scheduled for Jan. 17-18. This will serve as a precursor to the OUA Championships, also set to be hosted by Brock University from Feb. 6-8 at the Welland Curling Club.
The road to the national stage runs directly through the University of Alberta this week. Current and former Golden Bears and Pandas dominate the provincial field in Okotoks, cementing the program's status as a powerhouse.
